Posture Loads
Man adopted upright position between 3 to 5 milion years ago. The structure of vertebral column spinal joints, disks, emergence of spinal nerves opposite the weakness part of the column; joints are not designed to withstand the strains of compression and extension due to this upright posture.
Lumbar and cervical lordosis were developed to protect the posterior longitudinal ligament from excessive strain and to exert an interiorly directed pressure on the contents of the inter-vertebral joint and disc. The increased load of body weight leads to increased disc degeneration particularly in lumbar and sacral inter-vertebral disc.
This is a study of the pressure or load in the lumbar disc in different static positions of the body, during various muscles strengthening exercises and manoeuvres.
The approximate pressure on third lumbar disc in an individual of 70 kg body weight in different postures, are as follows:
Nature of activity Load in Kg.
The pressure in lumbar disc is more in sitting posture without support or with improper support.
Remember a good posture means a better life.

Nature of activity Load in Kg.
- Simple Laying 30
- With 30 kg. traction 10
- With both legs rising straight 120
- Simple standing 70
- Walking 85
- Twisting 90
- Bending side down 95
- Bending forward 120
- as above 185
- Sitting without back support 100
- Couching or Jumping 110
- Straining or laughing 120
- Lifting a 20 kg. with back straight, bend knees 210
- With back bent knees straight 340
The pressure in lumbar disc is more in sitting posture without support or with improper support.
